Bluebox Dental Lab

October 8, 2009

I want to welcome Andy Woods and the staff of Bluebox Dental Lab to Pelahatchie.  They have acquired the former home of the Pelahatchie Dental Clinic in the old Mrs. Inez Summer home on north Brooks.  They are currently refurbishing the interior and exterior of the building and will be here permanently in November.  We are excited that they have chosen Pelahatchie for their new home.  Welcome!

Upcoming Events

October 8, 2009

Please make note of the following upcoming events:

Halloween in the Park – October 29 – 6:30 to 8:30 at Muscadine Park.  There will be a costume contest for all ages, a pumpkin decorating contest, and an animal costume contest.  There will also be a Space Jump, Giant Slide, cotton candy, and more.  This is always a lot of fun so be sure to come out.

Christmas Parade- December 5 – times and theme to be determined soon.

New Opportunities for Involvement

October 8, 2009

As I have noted earlier, we will soon (hopefully) unveil our vision for the remainder of downtown and ask you to help.  One of the things we are looking at doing is incorporating a small splash pad into this work.  To help pay for this, we will soon be selling commemorative bricks that will be permanently installed in the downtown area.  This is the traditional brick on which you can honor a loved one, friend, or event.  We will be selling these bricks for $100 each.  We will have an order form soon on the website.  Contact City Hall for more information.

We are also going to begin an ongoing project through which you can honor someone special through the purchase of a tree.  A plaque will accompany the tree signifying you gift and the honoree.  Again, the cost will be $100 and the proceeds will go toward the continued beautification of our town.  We are developing an application which will be on our web site soon.

Project Update

October 8, 2009

The following is a short update on each project we have ongoing for which current progress has been made:

Community Center and Streetscape:  The interior demolition is complete with the exception of removal of hanging roofing, plaster on the interior walls, and the removal of the slab in the smaller section of the building.  The exterior paint removal is complete.  The exterior and interior walls will be repointed, cleaned, and sealed with a clear coat finish.  Some curb and gutter work has been completed on the north side of Highway 80.  The rainy weather has slowed progress considerably, but forecasted good weather next week should allow for catch up.  We also took the opportunity to reinstall a fire hydrant at the corner of Brooks and 80 that has been gone at least 40 years.

City Hall:  The elevator shaft has been constructed through the second floor and now is ready to go through the roof.  The interior stairs should be ready to install next week.   The ceiling has been removed from the second floor to prepare for installation of a new sheet rock ceiling.  Two of the original windows have been restored to full operating condition.  This project is moving along on schedule and is really beginning to take shape.

Ball Field/Youth Court:  Based on meetings I have attended, it appears that the Youth Court facility to be constructed at the Industrial Park will not begin construction before January.  We are currently doing title work and feasibility studies on a possible site for our ball fields.  Don’t get excited about “feasibility study” , this is nothing more than an engineer looking at the parcel to make sure that it is suitable before we buy it.

October Board Meeting

October 8, 2009

We held our regularly scheduled October Board Meeting at the Library on Monday, October 5.  We discussed the following:

We posted a lien for clean up costs on the Shelby Singleton Property on Shivers Street.

We approved various payments with regard to ongoing town projects.

We amended the 2009 City budget to its final form.  This is done each year to balance it in accordance with State law.

We approved the Municipal Compliance Report for 2009.

We discussed pot holes in the streets, of which there are many.  This is caused by the unusually wet conditions and we will give these attention as soon as possible.

Set the date for Halloween in the Park – October 29 and the Christmas Parade December 5.

Discussed the current status of town projects which is detailed in the next post (or two).

Community Center

September 21, 2009

The sandblasting crew continues their work and should wrap it up tomorrow.  I got my first peek at the work completed so far and it is incredible to see the building shorn of paint.  The bricks should be mostly a reddish brown color (after all the dust is blown off) and the architectural details of the building are really beginning to show.  We will try to put some pictures on the Facebook page as soon as they will let us.

Muscadine Pictures

September 21, 2009

The new Muscadine Jubilee pictures are now up on the town web site at www.pelahatchie.org.  Go by and see them.

Community Center

September 19, 2009

Today I am watching the sandblasting crew recover the exterior of the corner building soon to be community center.  They will start the work today and should complete by sometime next week.  It should be interesting to see what is actually under all that paint (I hope something is under there!).
